The Forces of the Adversary
Introduction
The ancient enemy of the Fae is known as The Adversary or The Nothing. Little else is known about the nature or form that this enemy takes - it is changeable and often even formless. It has been described as a colour or a feeling. Colloquially the term "The Nothing" is used to describe the forces, or lack thereof, of The Adversary (although strictly The Nothing could be thought of as the agenda and or power associated with The Adversary rather than The Adversary itself). The Adversary represents a dearth of life, a lack of anything, and agents which mean to make this the final reality in which all realms exist. It is unknown if The Adversary is one being, a collection of beings, or a hive (like the Fae themselves). It is also unclear if its motivations are by agenda or primal function.
The War in the Dreaming was fought against forces of The Adversary; Shadow Dragons and those who had fallen under the influences of the agenda of bringing all to an end for unknown reasons. Fighting The Nothing so directly almost destroyed all realms, the entire universe was almost lost.
Description
The Adversary has no fixed form (or any form at all...), although it seemingly may "infect" any known creature or element. Whatever The Adversary touches or is in the proximity of begins to fade from reality and or fall to the agenda of The Nothing. It is destruction incarnate. But worse, it is mundane destruction. It is entropy and lack of imagination (save Shadow Dragons which are the hammer to this underlying anvil) and seemingly conjured from bleak nothing in the distances of The Far Umbra (although this has never been confirmed as 100% fact).
At this time it is known that outside The Concordian Barrier Shadow Dragons swarm by the millions, thrashing against a barrier they (or anything else) can no longer penetrate.
The origins of The Adversary have never been fully recorded or even understood. What little we know is this; The Adversary existed in the Realm of Arcadia long before The War of Seasons and may well have been the reason The Fae abandoned their home long ago, The Nothing, The Adversary from that time and perhaps before also inhabited the edges, The Far Umbra as was prone to appearing in small incursions which were dealt with for eons by the Fae Edge Walkers. At some point, and for unknown reasons, around 2013 PC The Nothing surged in power, swarmed into the realms of the Fae in The Otherplace, the Umbra and even Earth Realm, this sparked The War In The Dreaming, which it eventually lost to The Treaty and The Shadow Order and what later became The Grand Concordian Empire.
There is no direct communication with The Nothing. Until The War in The Dreaming, it was exceptionally rare to kill a Shadow Dragon, and those who had done so were revered for the accomplishment. After The War in The Dreaming, there are many more Shadow Dragon killers in existence; it is still a great feat and honor to have slain one, often added to Fae titles.
The Nothing, The Adversary is responsible (via Shadow Dragons and various other means) for destroying many great Fae cities and enclaves including Oz and Forest City of Lorean. It murdered thousands of Fae during The War of The Dreaming without remorse - in particular, it preyed on young Fae, many of whom had not even discovered what they were at their times of death. It was an attempted genocide. Although The Nothing also attacked humans, its attacks seemed to concentrate on the "grand" Fae hive.
As of 2022 AOC it is not possible for The Adversary, or forces of The Adversary, to pass through The Concordian Barrier in either direction. Very occasionally a Nothing survivor from The War in the Dreaming is revealed or unearthed (such as a Shadow Dragon) but this is rare - these very minor incursions are taken care of by Imperial Blackmetal swiftly. It is not known at this time if The Nothing can breed and grow in number or power if left alone within the barrier (ie. Within the Empire, the controlled areas of the Fae).
